HISTORY
In 1970, Dr. John T. Flaxel, a native of North Bend, established his ophthalmology practice in the town. His office was initially situated in a building across from Keizer Hospital on Meade Street, which also housed North Bend Medical Center, Bay Optical, Bay Pharmacy, Dr. Robert Klever, and Dr. Vernon Klever.
In 1975, the practice welcomed Dr. Arthur F. S. Steele, expanding to accommodate two full-time ophthalmologists. By 1979, Drs. Flaxel and Steele constructed a new office building at 3585 Broadway in North Bend, founding Bay Eye Clinic.
Dr. Jon C. Kintner joined the practice in 1989, followed by Dr. Dennis E. Ottemiller in 1992. Dr. Flaxel semi-retired in 1995, and Dr. Debra A. Graham joined to take over his patients' care. In 2003, Dr. Steele also semi-retired, with Dr. Jane Gilbert assuming his patients' care. Dr. Steele fully retired and relocated to Portland in 2005, and Dr. Flaxel fully retired in October 2009.
Dr. Ottemiller retired in 2018, while Dr. Brandon Harr, O.D., joined the practice in 2020. Most recently, in September 2022, Dr. Hyun Soo "Kevin" Jang, M.D., became part of the team. Dr Graham retired at the end of 2022.
