Jon C. Kintner, M.D.
My first seventeen years were lived in Arizona. In 1960 I was born in the small town of Winslow on the Navajo Indian reservation. My father was the only doctor in town, so when I made my move to secure my place in society, my father was the one who welcomed me out. Soon thereafter our family of four moved to Mesa where I grew up. The nearby desert was as much a part of my upbringing as anything I can remember. I grew up feeling lucky to be alive and live where I did. I would spend as much time as possible outside and when inside at school I would read Zane Grey stories about being outside. My current appreciation of the outdoors, of hiking and camping, of observing the wonders of nature and geology as well as a respect for firearms and hunting all sprang from spending many days with my father, family and friends in the desert. While attending High School I took ground school flying lessons from a retired Navy pilot and went on to get my pilot’s license on the day of my sixteenth birthday. Later that year, I graduated from High School and decided to try and follow in my father’s footsteps and become a doctor. Traveling east to Indiana, I attended Manchester College. This is where my parents had met years before, and where I eventually graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Premed. Four years of Medical School followed which were punctuated by the appearance of a vivacious and very attractive lady, Shirley Burns, who soon became my wife. By the time I finished my specialty training in Ophthalmology, we had grown to a family of five (three sons) as we headed out west to our new home in Oregon. When I was offered a position at Bay Eye Clinic, I knew a good thing when I saw it. A great professional opportunity with top notch surgeons, a well run clinic (Norma was the manager even then!) with a modern and well maintained facility and great staff were strong selling points, but the icing on the cake was the rural environment with the outdoors so easily accessible. Arriving here in 1989, we at once put down roots in the community and continued to grow, adding a daughter to our family. We have also grown our family through our association with high school exchange students and our faith family at St. Monica’s church in Coos Bay. I continue to love the outdoors especially with my family and have expanded my hobbies to include archery, tennis and rose gardening. I also jog, but this is definitely not a hobby but rather a strategy to be able to eat more of Shirley’s fine cooking. She is kept busy with Pilates, dance classes, directing Christmas Opry, being the world’s most attentive mother to our four grown kids and taking care of me.
Professionally, I have been blessed with a busy practice and wonderful patients to work with. During my almost twenty years at Bay Eye Clinic, I have served as the Chief of Surgery at Bay Area Hospital for two separate two-year terms, Chief of Staff at Bay Area Hospital, a member of the board of the local DOCS IPA and president of the local medical society. I am a member of the Oregon Medical Association, Oregon Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. My practice interest is in General Ophthalmology and surgical interests are primarily cataract, glaucoma and lid surgeries. My practice is open to new patients in both the North Bend and Reedsport clinics.
