John T. Flaxel, M.D.
When I started Bay Eye Clinic and Bay Optical Lab in July 1970, my goal was to provide the highest quality, up-to-date medical, surgical and optical eye care to the citizens of the South Coast area where I was born and raised and where my wife and I wanted to raise our family.
Although I retired after 40 years, I feel honored to have had the opportunity to serve and work towards those goals and to see the clinic expand and grow to include such excellent eye physicians and great individuals as Drs. Arthur Steele (now retired), Jon Kintner, Dennis Ottemiller, Debra Graham and Jane Gilbert. The clinic and community are also fortunate to have excellent staffs under the guidance of Norma Wood and Gayla Mitchell.
The doctors and staff are continuing the tradition of striving to deliver the best modern eye care and subspecialty care through our visiting specialists from Casey Eye Institute and Northwest Retina. The service to provide local eye care in Florence, Reedsport, Coquille, Bandon, Port Orford, Gold Beach and Brookings has been and continues to be a gratifying effort.
My wife and I spend a significant amount of time in Portland where our grown children, growing grandchildren, and coming great grandchildren live. I work part time staffing eye care at the Veterans Administration Hospital and Clinic in Portland, but my heart is always in North Bend where it has been my joy to be of service and care for my patients and to see Bay Eye Clinic and Bay Optical carry on.
